Response to his Readers' Comments
أما بالنسبة الى للردود التى تناوات عاشق
الحى فى منتدى الكتاب العربى ، فانى أشكر
كل المشاركين عن الاراء الجادة والصائبة
التى تعرضت للرواية سواء بالسلب أو
الايجاب، فقد لمست من التعليقات اطلاع
عميق لرواياتى السابقة كما لمست من
يطالعنى للمرة الأولى ، لهذا فقد خانه
التوفيق فى وضعى بخانة واحدة مع كتاب
آخرين لاصلة بين مايبدعون وما أطرحه أنا ،
وربما ما دفع البعض الى هذا هوتناول الريف
فى بعض هذه الأعمال ، لكن المتعمق أكثر
يجد أن الآخرين يكتبون ريفا تقليديا على
النمط السائد ، أما مايود نصوصى فيتصل
بمكان آخر يعنى بالمدن الصغيرة التى لم
تكتب من قبل فى أدبنا العربى.
كم أدهشتنى المفاجأة التى عبر عنها البعض
فى اكتشافى أدبيا برغم رحلتى مع الكتابة
التى تمتد لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود، وأعجبنى
ربط البعض بين رحلة الاغتراب فى الوطن
وخارجه بأساليب سردية مباينة ، كذا
الاكتشاف المبهر بالمزج بين ماهو
سحرىوواقعى وهذه سمة غالبة على كثير من
رواياتى، وأقول لنور المشاركة فى
التعقيبات ان الشكل الفنى فى النص الأدبى
يطرح نفسه عفوا وليس بدافع الفزلكة.
بالنسبة للتصديق بالعفاريت والخرافات
فأقول ان هذا قناعات الشخصيات لا الكاتب
وأن الرواية تنفى هذا ولا تؤكده ، انها
حيلة فنية تمتح من الذاكرة الشعبية
ورواسبها الراسخة فى النفس الانسانية من
خلال الأسطورة التى يطرحها المكان ذاته.
في التعليق الأخير الذى يطرح السؤال
المجهل حول العلاقة بين القطط والعفاريت
والسفر الى دول الخليج احيلها الى تفسير
الناقد الكبير فيصل دراج الذى ربط بين
المرأة الخليجية المرتدية للنقاب الأسود
والعباءة السوداء والتى تعاقدت مع الزوجة
واقعيا وبين القط الأسود الذى اختطف
الزوجة أسطوريا فى الجزء الأول من عاشق
الحى.

I really want to say that ‘Lover of the
Living’ (a collection of three short
stories by Youssef Abu Rayya) is an
evocative picture of a time and a place,
shot through with brilliant vignettes,
but I can’t. After the strikingly
original and somehow vivid and funny
first story, the collection
disappointingly descends into
self-indulgent semi-poetry. Without any
originality or real significance, the
reader struggles through a slow moving
correspondence between a husband and his
expatriate wife, working in a gulf
country (obviously Saudi Arabia).
Against the smooth, honest and highly
readable narrative of the first story
‘Absent Underground’, the author seems
to dry up an decides to move in favour
of glimpses captured in static images of
a marriage falling apart. Mr Youssef Abu
Rayya gave us a very interesting start
but failed to deliver a middle and an
end to his creative effort . He should
go back to the first story in the
collection and follow the husband’s
odyssey around the ancient ruins and
find his way through his struggle with
Gods and Demons to rescue his woman.

as i finished reading it i felt like
we have a new writer can be like khairy
shalabvy, he is new to me and i hardly
found his book, also there was another
book for him that i could get (a wedding
night) that made me sure that the author
is so close to khairy shalaby's style in
writing that i admire the most

I was fascinated by this excellent
novel by the talented yusuf aburayya.
Particularly by the way he weaves the
different and divergent themes into one
unified tapestry. The ancient Egyptian
god Bobastis “who takes the form of a
cat” still lives in the minds of modern
day Egyptians and while his cult has
long disappeared, his influence
continues in the form of folklore. on
the otherhand the totally fantastic
account of the wife being snatched by a
jinn is the mirror reflection of the
real life tragedy based on the dire
economic situation that Egyptians face
everyday.

يستخدم الاديب يوسف أبو رية اسلوب
الواقعية السحرية ليسلط الضوء على معاناة
العاملين المغتربين في بلدان النفط، في
اطار يمثل الشكل الجديد للعبودية فزوجة
البطل التي سافرت للعمل فقدت كل أشكال
الاستقلال واصبحت لا تملك من أمرها شيئا،
وزوجها في مصر ليس أفضل حالا منها فهو
كذلك حبيس لهذا الوضع المشين.

تربط ما بين الماضي والحاضر والخيال
الجامح والواقعية الصرفة وعنصر الربط فيها
يتمثل في شعور غامر بفقدان المحبوب.

This is a truly creative novel but
while the sense of longing for a loved
one far away comes through very clearly
, other aspects of the novel such as
characters and conflicts are not
sufficiently developed.

من خلال شكل مبتكر ابتدع المؤلف رواية
خلابة ذات أبعاد ميتافيزيقية، فالانسان
يقف عاجزا أمام قوى غير مرئية تتحكم في
مصيره، وهي نفس القوى التي تحكمت فيه منذ
قديم الأزل، ثم يضاعف شعور الانسان بالعجز
من محنته في دائرة مغلقة لا مفر منها.

The parallels between the two sides
of the novel are skilfully established.
Supposedly the second half represents an
author’s personal experience while the
first half is novel. The manuscript
reflects how much he misses his wife in
a skilfull indication of how an author’s
mood is ultimately reproduced in his
work. What is amazing is that the
protagonist in the fictional account
whose wife has been snatched by the
spirits, is more actively involved in
trying to get her back than the real
life author whose only positive action
takes the form of his manuscript.

The book presents a good synsethsies
of the different art schools. However I
was surprised by its Eurocentric
perspective. I would have thought that
an arab author would have stressed that
western art is only a small part of the
larger achievements of different
cultures.

Arabic by Abdelwahab Aloub is a superb
book full of wit, humour and somehow a
poignant sadness for why such
originality has passed from our hands
into oblivion. Abdelwahab Aloub has
given us a carefully edited and
positioned work with a good eye for pace
and variety. In his painstaking prologue
he allowed us to see and understand how
he went about the process of renewing
the tales and choosing those stories
which appealed to our modern Arabic
sense of modesty and inhibition. The
tales are compelling and seductive and
their format is simple and pleasant, a
celebration in human art and culture,
always alluding to ‘One Thousand and One
Nights’.

There is no doubt that books of folklore
such as the parrots tales that have
survived the centuries hold a number of
profound and incisive human
observations. These tales carry the
truth of what people think and not
necessarily what they choose to say. It
is always refreshing to read folk tales
from differenet cultures.

هذا الكتاب مسلي وربما ينقل الينا حكمة
الأجيال المتراكمة لكنه في الوقت ذاته
مقلق فحكاياته تمجد الكذب والخداع ولا
تعير أدنى اهتمام للأخلاق، فالغاية
الوحيدة هي البقاء والثراء، فحتى عندما
يروي الببغاء قصصه للأميرة بهدف تعطيلها
عن الذهاب لعشيقها فلا يفعل ذلك الا
بالدهاء والكذب.
