بعد قراءة كتاب الدكتورة الحفني شاهدت على شاشة الفضائية المصرية سيدة الغناء العربي في حفل قديم لها، واسترجعت على الفور قول الفنان عبده صالح عازف القانون بأن صوتها يتبع جسمها ونفسييتها لذلك فهو كان في كل حفلة يضبط طبقة الصوت وفقا لحالها النفسية والصحية، ثم استرجعت بعد قليل قول الأستاذ عبده صالح أن ام كلثوم كانت تنسى أحيانا بعض كلمات الأغنيات فكان هو حينئذ يعيد الجملة الموسيقية مرات ومرات حتى تسترد أنفاسها وتتذكر الكلمة الغائبة عن ذهنها، ما أجمل مثل هذه التفصيلات التي كنا نجهلها عن الست

Ratiba el-Henfi wrote in the archaic Arabic style a particularly fascinating book. It
is a sympathetic and lively account of certain moments in the life of our super diva Umm
kolthoum. Ratiba managed to immerses us in the world of fascinating and innovative people
trading in invaluable poetry, harmonising modern instruments to suit the rhythm of the
traditional middle eastern music sounds all spiced with religion and culture. The writer
produced an original book packed with charming details and unexpected delights. It seems
to me to be impolite to criticise the book beyond the compliment because of its precious
subject.

Dr. Ratiba does an excellent job of exposing the different aspects of the spectacular
phenomena called Om Kalthoum. Most interesting is her assessment as a professional
vocalist that Om kalthoum's voice was virtually an exception to the laws of nature,
because her voice did not lose much with age.

ما أجمل الطرائف التى تضمنها الكتاب وأذكر مثلا
عندما استدعت أم كلثوم الموجى وكان ملحنا شابا وحضر
الى منزلها فوجد الثالوث العملاق عبده صالح- محمد
رامى- القصبجى فأعطته أم كلثوم قصيدة الجلاء قائلة
دون مقدمات " الحفلة بعد 15 يوما " ، وفى موضع
آخر يقول الموجى " بهدلتنى " وأرهقتنى كثيرا فى
" للصبر حدود " الكتاب مليء بلقطات حية نابضة
وأشكركم عليه.

This book by el-Hefni is no simple biography for one of the legends of Arabic music. It
is an expose of the stars of Egyptian culture in the 20th century. How can I forget the
scene in which Ahmed Shawki, the prince of poets, went to visit Om Kalthoum for the first
time, or when the young poet Ahmed Rami came from Paris to attend one of her performances
in a small corner of the Azbakeya Garden. One can only feel nostalgic to those chivalrous
and passionate times.

I haven't really managed to read it through yet. The book has arrived quite late this
month on account of the long holiday for the Greater Bairam. However I am really enjoying
what I have covered so far. I think what makes that book special is that the biographer
herself is a specialist in song. She possesses a strong feel for this kind of book.

بكافة المقاييس فيتناول نشأة أم كلثوم وتطورها

المصريات الأخريات، ويستعرض من جهة ثالثة علاقتها
بالملحنين والشعراء والعازفين الموسيقيين ويتضمن
قوائم قيمة بأعمالها مقسمة بين الشعراء والملحنين
وأيضا أبيا جميلة من أغانيها ، وهو كتاب أسعد كثيرا
باقتنائه والرجوع اليه من وقت الى آخر.

I wonder why Arab intellectuals are so fond of playing these dubious sentimental
games. Here we have a novel that supposedly explores the 21st century entirely based upon
20th century idioms and ideas. For some inexplicable reason globalisation is equalised
with Isreali aggression. That Ifail to understand. Throughout the book there is a
persvasive sense of unease with the future, a sense of condemnation to a more globalised
world and to the new generations as a whole. Would it not have been more objective to
emphasise that globalisation presents the Arab World with a golden oppportunity for
liberation , for democracy and respect of human rights? Would it not be more realistic to
stress our need to adapt ourselves to face the challenges of globalisation rather than
demonise the outside world and blame others for our own shortcomings?

الصهاينة في منطقتنا ، ووضح بما لا يترك مجالا للشك

The author has not made up his mind whether he is writing an experimental novel or a
traditional one. His use of multiple view points is not justified by the subject he is
tackling. It slows down the novel and renders the monlogues superficial unfortunately.

الأستاذ عطية طرح بالفعل أسئلة مهمة إلا أنني لا
أعتقد أن وظيفة الروائي تتمثل في طرح الإجابات فهذا
متروك للقارئ المثقف الواعي، بل يمكنني أن أقول أن
نقطة الضعف الرئيسية في هذه الرواية تتمثل في
المحاولة غير المكتملة لطرح الأسئلة وتقديم
الإجابات في آن، وأتفق في هذا مع ما ذكره الأستاذ
يوسف رخا في عرضه للرواية وهذا لا يعني اعتراضا من
جانبي على أن يقدم الؤلف وجهة نظره في حوار خارجي
على هذا النحو، مع ملاحظة أن وجهة النظر هذه لا
تتعدى كونها مجرد اجتهاد لا يعد بالضرورة الكلمة

Khizant el-Kalam immerses us in a world of wooden people, moving across a series of blank
settings and backgrounds, without any effort on the part of Gamil Ateya Ibrahim to
spotlight his characters or bring colour upon his stage. He is an unsure guide who has
produced an unoriginal book packed with unfascinating details and hardly an unusual plot.
At the heart of this wide open Safe of Words are the stories of two flawed and could be
charismatic men who each experience a close encounter with an alien being; one happened to
be an enemy spy. These non-dimensional characters of no space, I am told, are instantly
recognisable by those who follow the Arabic televised series. However to me they remained
displaced people of no recognisable location - adults caught between the pages of a book
unable to do anything for themselves. Despite that, and if the reader grins and bares it,
the novel is intriguing and in places suspenseful. Yet, I remained unimpressed, constantly
wondering if only Mr Gamil Ateya Ibrahim were more in contact with his characters, perhaps
it would all have been so different.

من منظور علمي بحت أجد شخصية الدكتور سامح
الدهشوري غير مقنعة، ففي الوقت الذي يمكن أن نصدق
وجود نماذج من الأطباء تهتم بالتجارة بالدرجة
الأولى، إلا أنه من الصعب تصديق أن يكون مثل هؤلاء
باحثين تتوفر لديهم الرغبة والقدرة على إجراء
الأبحاث الناجحة، كما أن الأستاذ عطية ابراهيم على
ما يبدو لم يدرك أبعاد التنظيم الحديث للبحث العلمي
فوقت الاكتشافات الفردية قد مضى والعلم الآن مبني
على عمل جماعي منظم وباهظ التكلفة ، ومع هذه

جيدا للقرن الجديد.

تصدينا لغزوتها الحضارية.

In fact, character is, as in previous works, not of pre-eminent concern to Mohamed
Heikal. At the outset, in the prologue, he makes it clear by snippets what is to come. The
relentless scorn, regardless, of non Egyptian politicians is at least as complex the
mayhem that engulfs them. Yet I get that feeling, of course not evidenced in the work,
that he is withholding his opinion and thoughts about these Cairoian men against whom he
publicly never errs. Which is a great pity. This sort of emission is only flashingly
justified to the sceptickal reader. It would have been useful if he provided personal
commentary on the events, advocated certain public policies or just furnished special
information and advice to the readers. Heikal is an estiblishment figure and enjoys a wide
circle of powerful backers. Sketching the personalities of the era of Nasser, he speaks as
of a fond memory; you could almost see the glint in his eyes. Only at these pages I felt I
was in his company. Of course Salam el-Awham is not a new book and even though it is
factual, (there is plenty of details and vivid description) it remains Heikal's own
personal choice of what to expose to the reader. The best I've read about the book is
Mohammad Ala'a Eddean's email to amazon.co.uk Secert Channels is a Brilliant Analytical
Rendition On How Palestine Was Sold Out. Salam el-Awham is not an historical document, but
an overall chronological view of certain events, be it limited by the nature of the work
and the author's limitation of what he can authenticate. Given the sensitivity of the
work, the secrecy in which the Arab leaders operate it is still an eye opener as is the
rest of his work. It is well written as you would expect, in the usual journalistic style
of Heikal, which makes the book an easy read. Despite the chronological shifts to generate
tension, there is little in the way of plot. The work's success or failure therefore rests
heavily on the quality and reputation of Mohamed Heikal. He takes pains to ensure that
everything he describes is useful and interesting. Yet how much more useful and
interesting it would have been had he described the thoughts of each of those quarrelsome
conspirators who plague the Arabs without any forethought as to the unity of the whole.

The basic premise of Mr. Heikal's book is that the Oslo process is flawed because it is
forward looking rather than backward looking, in short because it is not based on the
historic right of the Palestinian people. This may be a clever theoretical point. However
in practice, and in view of the balance of forces currently and into the foreseeable
future the approach espoused by Heikal is a non-starter. The only way a Palestinian state
can come into existence is if it is perceived by Israel as serving its interests. In
brief, the Israeli public have to be convinced that it has to choose between the
settlements on the one hand and a genuine peace on the other. This can only be achieved by
a step by step approach. Let us not forget that if Israel had a way of getting rid of the
Palestinian population in the West Bank it would have done that a long time ago. Also I
would like to remind those who share Heikal's misgivings about the Oslo process, that it
has allowed the Palestinian leadership to be united with its people for the first time
which gives the present Intifada an added political weight.

يشير السيد هيكل إلى اجتماع عقد بجنيف عام 1988 شارك
فيه هو شخصيا والأستاذ أحمد بهاء الدين والبرفيسور
إدوارد سعيد ونخبة من الشخصيات الفلسطينية بهدف
تقديم النصح لمنظمة التحرير حول أنسب سبل التحرك
المتاحة أمامها ، وأن هذا الاجتماع قد توصل إلى
ضرورة أن يكون هذا التحرك على أساس قرار التقسيم
وليس قرار 242 .
والواقع انني أجد هذه النصيحة مثيرة
للدهشة حيث أن الشرط الإسرائيلي الأمريكي لمجرد
بدء الحوار مع المنظمة تمثل في اعترافها بالقرار 242
ونبذ الإرهاب ، فالنصيحة التي قدمها هؤلاء
المفكرون للمنظمة كانت إذا نصيحة غير مرتبطة
بالخيارات الواقعية التي طرحت أمام المنظمة ، فوضع
المنظمة في تلك المرحلة كان حرجا ، فمن ناحية أصبح
خيار الحرب بين العرب وإسرائيل غير وارد بخروج مصر
من المعادلة وهو الأمر الذي تأكد بظهور إرهاصات
لانهيار الاتحاد السوفييتي ، كما كانت قدرة
المنظمة على القيام بعمليات عسكرية ضد إسرائيل
أيضا محدودة لأسباب أسهب في إيضاحها الأستاذ هيكل ،
ومن ناحية أخرى فكان تمسك المنظمة على قرار التقسيم
191 دون القرار 242 كان يترتب عليه اتخاذها موقف رافض
للعملية السلمية بأسرها دون أن يكون لديها بدائل
أخرى .
ويجب الإقرار بحقيقة أن الوقت المناسب
لقبول قرار التقسيم كان عام 1948 أما عام 1988 أو عام 2001
فلا يوجد في إسرائيل شخص واحد يقبل بهذا القرار ،
وتعين على المنظمة أن تستفيد بقوة الدفع التي
ولدتها الانتفاضة لتحقيق إنشاء الدولة الفلسطينية
على الأراضي التي احتلتها إسرائيل عام 67 مع قبول
الحلول الوسطى فيما يتعلق بمدينة القدس وحق العودة.

ويدعمها بالوثائق الأساسية ويستخلص منها كلها رؤية
ثاقبة للتاريخ

كتاب هيكل استعراض تاريخي مفصل يتناول تطور
القضية الفلسطينية من الاعتماد الكامل علي العالم
العربي - و بصفة خاصة مصر - إلى وصول الشعب الفلسطيني
مؤخرا الى مرحلة الإمساك بزمام قضيته ، ويمكن القول
بأن أحداث الانتفاضة الثانية تضيف فصلا أساسيا الى
سجل تحرير الإرادة الفلسطينية .
إلا أنه في الوقت
ذاته يصعب تجاهل حقيقة التطور المضاد الذي صار
متوازيا مع عملية تحرير الإرادة الفلسطيينية ، وهو
التطور المتمثل في عملية الاستيطان الإسرائيلي
التصاعدي في الأراضي الفلسطينية ، مما يحول الصراع
العربي الإسرائيلي الى صورة جديدة تقترب من أشكال
الحروب الأهلية ، وليس واضحا حتى الآن إن كان هذا
التطور يخدم القضية الفلسطينية أن أنه يتيح
للحكومات العربية التبرير لأن ترفع أيديها عن
الدعم الحقيقي للشعب الفلسطيني.
وفي هذا الإطار
لا يفوتني أن أشير الاستعراض الدقيق الذي تضمنه
كتاب السيد هيكل للصورة التي ظلت بها القضية
الفلسطينية مجرد ورقة من أوراق لعبة السياسة
يتصارع عليها القادة العرب كل لتحقيق أهدافه

يؤكد الأستاذ هيكل حقيقة أساسية وهي أن صراع مصر
مع إسرائيل كان دفاعا عن المصالح القومية المصرية
ومصالح الشعب الفلسطيني في آن ، فلم تدخل مصر
الحروب من منطلق التعاطف أو العطف وحدهما إنما
حاربت دفاعا عن مصالحها بالدرجة الأولي.
وهي في الواقع نقطة مهمة جدا لأن فكرة القومية
العربية مبنية على اشتراك المصالح واشتراك المشاعر
، فالمشاعر وحدها لا تبني أمة.
ومن هنا يمكن
الخلوص الى أن توقيع معاهدة السلام المصرية

In Hekal’s detailed account of recent history in the middle east, one fact comes
out crystal clear, the peoples of the region have always enjoyed higher awareness and have
acted more responsibly than their leaderships. I can only conclude that the only
possibility of countering Israel’s superior military and organizational capacity is
through a genuine process of democratisation in the Arab Countries .

دليلا إضافيا موثقا على أن القيادة الإسرائيلية لم
تكن يوما جادة في ادعائها المعلن للوصول إلى تسوية
سلمية مع الشعب الفلسطيني ، ومن نماذج السلوك
الإسرائيلي في هذا الشأن لجوئها الحالي إلى عملية
منظمة للتصفية الجسدية للعناصر القيادة
الفلسطينية المؤثرة في إدارة الانتفاضة ، وهو
الأمر الذي يتم بالتوازي مع ما يطلق عليه ضلالا
مفاوضات التسوية .
