A Question of Savagery
The new novel by Gamil
Atteya is a mosaic of interweaving images and situations which leaves the
reader facing the fundamental questions of our times. Ateyya's characters
find themselves in an endless quest for illumination amidst meals in
cafes and restaurants and bright colored balloons while humanity is tearing
itself apart. With the Geneva conventions, the Bosnia world crime's
tribunal, Sharon's atrocities and the plight of the Iraqi people in the
background, the novel's intellectual protagonists are torn between their
helplessness and the parallel reality of their dreams.
A
naughty boy called Antar
"An
exciting novel that captivated me from page one, with its original
plot, its firm grasp on the Egyptian situation and its author's
skill." With these words Sonallah Ibrahim describes Mohamed
Tawfik's second novel entitled "A naughty boy called
Antar," which has just been issued by Miret publishing house.
While employing the genre of a fast moving thriller, the author
attempts to uncover the intricate dilemmas of Egyptian society. He
deploys an original structure with multiple layers and plot lines
and does not shy from mixing genres. The end product blends social
satire with metaphysics, political analysis with suspense, comedy
with intellectual stimulation.
Amrikanli
His recent novel, Americanli,
portrays intellectuals as ordinary people. “We should not expect
intellectuals to act like heroes or to perform mythological feats,” he
said.
The neologism Americanli is reminiscent for Egyptians of the slang word
Othmanli, which used to mean Turkish when Egypt was under Turkish
domination. Its division into three words would mean in Arabic, “Once I
Was my Own Master” (Amri kan li).
Ibrahim is not the only Egyptian intellectual who draws a parallel between
the domination exerted by the Ottoman Empire and the Turks over Egypt in the
past and the current US political and economic influence in the country.
