Imam Muhammad Abduh: The Reformer of the Age
While the world surrounding Al-Azhar—its lessons and its sheikhs—was advancing, and daily life was bringing forth novelties of which they were entirely unaware, methods of scholarship and research were constantly evolving. Yet, they remained trapped in a cycle of insularity, turning their backs on the changing realities of modern life. Consequently, religion became isolated from daily existence; Muslims ceased to keep pace with the times and instead fell behind.
This situation led those educated under European systems to accuse religion of being the root cause of backwardness and stagnation, arguing that Muslims must abandon religious studies to join the march of civilization and keep pace with modern progress. Naturally, this contradicts the example of the early Muslims, who—thanks to their faith and the application of reason to its tenets—were ahead of their time; this historical reality refutes such accusations. Thus, Imam Muhammad Abduh dedicated himself to bridging the gap between religion and life by championing the role of reason in understanding Islamic teachings, sciences, and Quranic interpretation—thereby diverging from the scholars of his era, who were accustomed to restricting what God had made expansive and prohibiting what He had permitted.
