The Diwan of Mahmoud Bairam el-Tounsy is a touching biography and thoughtful reflection upon the life of this great Arab Poet, Bairam el-Tounsy. The diwan gives a vivid portrait of Cairo, the epicentre of Arab culture and new ideas in the pre-Nasser's era. Though Biaram mostly wrote in the colloquial Cairene accent, he was and surely remains both intensely Tunisian and distinctly secular. Full of drama and irony, heartbreak and humour, Bairam's poems of short scenarios in his peculiar and profound graphic style reveal the truth about identity, family, love and belonging.

The very first poem in this book is in itself a masterpiece in form and structure. But in substance it is the work of a truly post modern artist who does not feel at home in Egypt or Tunisia or france .although taken literally the artist is complaining about the politics of migration, in fact he is portraying an internationalist frame of mind defined by the contradictions of restlessness and yearning.

من الملاحظ أن شعر العامية يلقى احتراما متزايدا في مواجهة الفصحى ومما لا شك فيه أن المعاني في شعر العامية أكثر صدقا وتلقائية، قهو شعر يمس حياة الناس بشكل مباشر لكن السؤال المطروح: هل يرجع ذلك الى وجود فرق في التأثير النفسي للغتين الفصحى والعامية أم أن القضية تتعلق باستعداد شاعر العامية للنزول الى مستوى النناس وبعده عن التعالي عليهم ؟ ألا يوجد في ذلك درس يجب أن يتعلمه شعراء الفصحى؟
