Hala El-Badry is an acclaimed Egyptian novelist, short story writer, critic and journalist born in Cairo in 1954.  She was the first woman elected to the board of Radio and Television Magazine and is president of PEN International, Egypt Branch. She received the State Excellence award in Literature in 2012 and the best novel award at the Cairo International Book Fair in 2001 for her novel “A Certain Woman”, and again in 2018 for her novel “Cities of the Walls”.
She holds a diploma in Journalism, Faculty of Media, 1988 and has a Bachelor of Arts in Commerce, Cairo University, 1975. She was Chairperson of the Board of Directors and Editor-in-Chief of Egyptian Radio and Television Magazine. From 1975 to 1980 she was Bagdad correspondent for the Egyptian Rose Al-Youssef Magazine.
El-Badry has given lectures on her work in many international universities including the University of Chicago, Wayne State University, Michigan University, Cairo University, Ain shams University and the University of Algeria.
In 1988, Youssef Idriss presented her first novel “Al-Sebaha fi Qomqom,  (Swimming in a Bottle)” which was received with great enthusiasm. She followed that with two more novels, “Muntaha” in 1995 and “Layssa al-ane (Not Now)” in 1998. During that period, she also published two short story collections “Raqsat al-chams wal gheim (The Sun and Cloud Dance)” in 1989 and “Agnehat al-hossane (The Horse Wings)” in 1992.  She went on to publish several acclaimed novels and short story collections, most recent of which are “The Cities of the Walls” in 2017 and “Women in my Home” in 2019 both published by al-Dar al-Masriya al-Lubnaniya.
Many of Hala El-Badry stories have been translated into English, French, Spanish, Serbian, Greek, Azerbaijani and Russian, and several of her novels were published in different languages.
“A Certain Woman” was published in English by the American University Press in Cairo in 2003 with a second edition in 2004 and a third edition published by Arabia books in London in 2005. Her novel “Muntaha” was published in English in 2005 by the American University Press followed by her novel “Rain over Baghdad” in 2014.
