I disagree with those who deal with Mohamad
Ikbal as though he were a political writer
or an ideologue and ignore the fact that
above all he is a mystic. We should never
ignore that this is one of the great modern
Sufis. Maybe we would appreciate his poetry
much more.

I understand that the national project
for translation is an important
inititiative in egypt. It aims at
providing a variety of important works
that were hitherto unavailable to the
arab reader. But unfortunately this book
is full of printing errors to the point
that makes reading very difficult. I
wish the directors of the translation
project would put more emphasis on the
need for good editorial work

Iqbal differs from the great Sufis such
as Rumi and Ibn Arabi in that his
worldly inclinations are beyond doubt,
and here, I am not only referring to his
position on the need for Indian muslims
to create a new state (Pakistan) but
also his general position in opposing
modernity and rational disciplines such
as philosophy. For example I will quote

الأولى التي يتاح لي الاطلاع على فكر محمد
إقبال فاكتشفت مفكرا مهما نجح في توجيه

The translated book of poems by Iqbal,
Muhammad who is described to be an
Indian Muslim poet, philosopher, and
political leader during the early 20th
century. The book or poetry expresses
the authors’ feeling against certain
period of the so-called colonialism but
for the present time it may nourishes
terrorism rather than producing any
pleasure for readers. Indeed, we have
enough poems from Muslim writers. These
kinds of books are cumulating across
history and are transformed to holy
books and Muslim communities are
hypnotized and becoming out of date and
repeating or singing what these books
contains. The world community is going
forward and Muslims are going backwards.
There is no indication in the history
that such books helped but good for
folklore. Progress, if any, is done by
politicians and their nations. Therefore
I found no reason why the book was
translated unless people who decide the
action are representing the whole trend
of modern Egyptian society to go back
for Islamism and fundamentalism. This
poet got a lot of education in western
society and should be indebted to them,
but rather he insulted them and to
publish his book in Arabic today it
inflames Islamic terrorism. I am sure
that this book will be very well sold in
Middle Eastern countries. So the
translation will be successful
economically but not for real culture
purpose. One can read great translation
of philosophical books from old China or
Greece which deal with human as human
but not as only Muslim. His severe
attach on Europe and modern civilization
(e.g. page 46 Asrar al Shariah), Europe
which educated him, puts the writer in
today’s’ situation as those imams who
help terrorists by their philosophy,
though perhaps Iqbal did mean it at his
time and was considered a good Muslim
thinker of his period. One final request
to the board of Montada, to give the
reader the chance to select his/her
preferred book.

حسنا انا الى الان لم اقرأ هذا الكتاب ..
لقد رأيته في المكتبات على الارفف و
استطتعت ان اتصفح من سطرين .. لم استطع ان
اشتريته فالسعر يبلغ درجة مرعبة دفعتني
لأن اكتفي برواية " شيفرة دافنشي " و لكنى
قرأت عنه - اقصد الكتاب - لدرجة اني ايقنت
بأنها الرجاء الصانع كاتبة مميزة أذا انها
استطاعت ان تكمل رواية تتثر كل هذه الضجة
فالعبرة هي ايقاظ حماسة الناس في نظري و
الكلمات ليست سوى وسيلة . اتمنى ان توفق
في رواية اخرى حتى لا تكون - على رايها -
بيضة الديك.

I must say when my friends and I get
together we talk about stories that
happens in the society that is way more
shocking than this story! I think it's
an entertaining book just like one of
these series in the holy month
Ramadan... I don't see how she helped
the society or how she changed anything
by showing ONLY the negative side “the
dark side”! There is no society that is
perfect. She wanted to show the American
society is more ideal than the
Arab/Islamic society ... She should
re-evaluate the way she thinks... I wish
her all the best… I am in the same age
of her but yet I think she was so
judgmental… it’s funny and ironic that
all the people who “pretend” to be
open-minded are the most judgmental
forgetting that the first thing about
being open-minded is not to judge
people.

أمر مؤسف ان يخرج لنا صعاليك خرجوا من

كيفية التحليق ..يالسخرية حفا هو امر مؤسف
شعرت بالتقزز وتلك الساقطة وهي تكتب عن
ماتسمية بنات الرياض وقد صالت وجالت
وتمادت وخرجت عن المألوف عن قيم ومبادئى
اسر عاشوا ومازالوا يعيشون على الورع
والتعفف والصدق والأحسان إن مايحتوية هذ
الكتاب السخيف من عبارات سخيفة ساذجة
تذكرني بأفلام كرتون توم وجيري التي يحرص
ابنائي دائما على مشاهدتها اقول ان
الكلمات السخيفة في هذ الكتاب السخيف الذي
ينم عن سخف مؤلفتة يطرح تسائل لدى كثيرا
من المجتمع ياترى من المستفيد من نشر مثل
هذه السخافات؟ هل هم دور النشر؟ نعم
فاهؤلا لاهم لهم سوى المادة وإلا كيف
ينشركتاب منحط ويتحدث عن الأنحطاط ام ان
ناشرة حديث التفقيس يريد مقارعة كتابنا
العمالقة امثال طه حسين ومي زبادة ومحمد
شكري وقطر الندى ومن سار على نهجهم؟ حقا

Girls of Riyad, Raja al-Sanea’s first
novel revels in absurdities and
assumptions which are often
intentionally so naive that one can only
assume the characters do not know they
are making them. Here, where
unimaginably easy-come wealth and
patriarchalism descend hand in hand
directly from God to earth through the
venerable ruler, it is hard to make
generalizations but not difficult to
commit absurdities. Writing whimsically
and very amusingly most of the time, the
author very intelligently and bravely
sheds light upon the personal
insecurities of four young if ultra rich
women who desperately try to find
meaning to their lives. Perhaps the
novel wasn't supposed to turn out like
this, a proof that religious believes
were in retreat and that secularism,
reason and science are winning. This of
course has great social and political
effects and sure consequences upon the
whole question of spirituality.

In Islamic History refer to the people
living in the Holy places in Saudi
Arabia and their behavior. I wish if i
could go deeply through the political
history in such a way to give the proper
idea and comments of reality * Their
system is very conservative and mostly
the religious rules are still governing
all Saudi women are governed by the
strict rules, their rights failed in
some way or another, no body her her/his
thoughts or cities freely, even no one
dare to discuss the picture of
progressive society as a whole including
Saudi women rights. i may believe it
will take long time to change all strict
rules and laws in their system.

قرأت" بنات الرياض" بتؤدة.إ نها رواية
مذهلة بالنسب للوسط الذي صدرت منه ، وهو
وسط محافظ وبالنسبة لكاتبها، وهي أنثى
سعودية. وسمعت كثيراً من اللغط حولها. في
نظري راهناً ومكانا ومايحيط بالنص الأدبي
الإبداعي ، لاأجد ما أقارن به رجاء الصانع
الشجاعة سوى ليلى بعلبكي ، فحينما قرأت
كتاب هذه الأخيرة : سفينة حنان إلى القمر
في بداية الستينات مع نص الحكم الذي
أصدرته المحكمة لتبرئة ساحتها لم أتمالك
نفسي من الضحك حول أسلوب نسخة الحكم الذي
يشبه أساليب القرون الوسطى. محمد

الرواية جيدة على أي حال . خصوصا أنها
العمل الأول للكاتبة . ما أثار الجدل في
الوسط الثقافي السعودي هو ليس مستوى
الرواية ولا الكاتبة . المعروف أنه _
عربيا _ لكي تضمن توزيع كتابك ولكي تضمن
مقعدا في الضمير النقدي الشديد النزاهة هو
أن تتحدث عن العالم السفلي ولا أقصد
بالسفلي موقفي الشخصي وإنما أعني الداون
تاون . في السعودية تستولي كتيبة من نقاد
النوايا وكتبة التقارير على عرش الثقافة
وهو عرش لايطمع فيه سوى بليد !! الشاهد أن
بنات الرياض أيضا أعني العبارة مجردة هو
اسم لنوع شائع من حبوب الامفيتامين التي
يتعاطاها السعوديون وانا منهم بكثرة .
ولكن عموما يبقى للدكتورة رجاء ان حفرت
ثقوبا في هذا الجدار الأسود من كثرة الحجب
والأقنعة

I think it is more useful to read the
book of (I think Khalil abd Elkarim?) to
know more about women in arabic
societies along history. Nothing has
been changed. I have patiently read the
book of Girls of Riyadh and did not
enjoy it to any extent where it is
descriptive to events which are clear in
man dominated arabic societies. It is
good to introduce young writers to the
society but the quality of the readers
should also be respected. Please send to
us more prestigious books in the future.

ليس هناك قيمة أدبية تذكر على الرغم من
الهزة التي احدثتها في المجتمع الذي يهزه
اي شئ طالما عناصر "الهز" متوفرة من عنوان
ملفت وكاتبة وتقديم شخص بمستوى الدكتور
الأديب غازي القصيبي. أخذت منها الرواية 6
سنوات لكتابتها. لو أنها أمضت هذا الوقت
للقراءة المكثفة لساعدتها على كتابة رواية
أكثر عمقا. أنصح أن لا تتعجل في روايتها
القادمة وأن تتعلم من سلبياتها قبل
إيجابياتها. الرواية كانت دافعا للشباب من
الجنسين للقراءة فهذه ايجابية تحسب لها
لتشجيعهم على مسك الكتاب . لا اتفق مع
البعض بأنها سلسلة فضائح وذلك لعدم تعرضها
لأعراض الناس بالاسم. تحدثت بحرية, وإن
بدت غير ضرورية في مواقع قليلة, عن
السلبيات التي تصادفهم في مجتمع مغلق
ومزدوج الشخصية يقر الجميع بوجودها ولكن
لا احد يجرؤ على الدخول في تفاصيلها فما
بالك أن الراوي بنت من بنات الرياض بداية
كل فصل بآيات قرآنية وأحاديث نبوية وبعض
الشعر اعطاني شعورا بقرب الكاتبة من دينها
ومجتمعها برغم نقمها على الظواهر السلبية

competently and superbly translated into
Arabic by Mohamed Yehia, Shohrat el-Alem
and Hala Fouad. We can discover much

Nation State by several centuries. But
perhaps the greatest insights into the
Western mind come from its dealings with
the poor and puny nations, revealing the
West’s priorities, concerns and beliefs
of its worldview. This is a gripping
read which I finished in practically
three sittings and was astonished how
the literary pace was kept up
throughout. And though the narrative was
grounded in historical and political
details the style was almost novelistic,
thoughts and feelings were ascribed to
those subject matters involved and well
chosen. This fascinating book helps us
Arab get inside an alien world where
militarism and capitalism walk hand in

I agree with the remark about cultural
imperialism but we should keep in mind
that this can only generate cultural
resistance which is probably the best
