Prophesy Ye Blind One is a book by Ali Ahmed Said better known as Adonis. I wish to say that this volume was written with passion, humour and a sense of history, but I have to be honest to myself and say no, it isn’t. The poet recounts his peripatetic travels through several European cities, without given the Arab reader a feel or a taste of these foreign places. Instead, he meanders between cafes as if blind to the social cohesion of these places where free will is a fundamental right, a fact which unfortunately our Arab cities don’t seem to enjoy because of State control but mainly due to our religious ethos. This work shows Adonis to be quite well-informed about the European culture and I felt that the writing was a feeble recount of his cosmopolitan credentials. Read with this in mind I came to some sort of understanding of the objectivity, time and place of each poem, however I felt that he failed to convince me.

يتناول الشاعر الكبير بعمقه وشاعريته المعهودتين قضايا الغربة والمنفى وثنائية البعد والقرب، فيقول:
أوه ، متى يشفى ذلك المرض
الذي يسمى الوطن؟

ثم بعد مسافة يتدارك وكأنه يرد على نفسه ويقول:
إن قلت: بلادي الشعر
وطريقى الحب.

هذا الكتاب يحتوي على عدد من القصائد البديعة ولكنه يضم أيضا عدد من الأعمال التي يطلق عليها قصيدة النثر، التي هي في الواقع بعيدة كل البعد عن القصيدة، هي مجرد نثر أسلوبه وإن كان أنيقا فأنه يخلو من المعنى الأعمق الذي يتوقعه القارئ من النثر الجيد. في هذا الكتاب استمتعت بالقصائد ولم أضجر من قصائد النثر وإن كنت شعرت أنها أضاعت وقتي أكثر من اللازم.

In this poetry collection the renowned arab poet known as Adonis, provides us with a volume of cerebral poetry. There is no hint of emotions or of the spirit. This is a haughty kind of poetry designed for intellectuals but not recognising the concerns of ordinary people and the issues of nations.
