A writer, a vision, a journey: a conversation with Nihad Sirees
Venue: Online via Zoom
Date: September 18, 2021
This episode took place on Saturday 18 September, 2021 . You can watch the full video here:
Through this series of in depth conversations with Arab and international authors, arabworldbooks.com aims to explore the vision, motivation, process, and of course, the outcomes of a writer's journey. These conversations will, hopefully, shed some light on the values and experiences that are common to writers and readers across the world, while taking into account their respective idiosyncrasies and cultural specificities.
We are delighted to feature Nihad Sirees in this event.
Born in the ancient city of Aleppo, Nihad Sirees is an acclaimed novelist, playwright and screenwriter. His works, known for their realism, were first published in Syria in the nineteen eighties. While many of his works feature contemporary social interactions in his native Aleppo, he is considered to be one of the first writers in Syria to write historical novels.
The discussion will be conducted in English and moderated by Egyptian novelist Mohamed Tawfik.

A message from Wallis Wilde-Menozzi
I would like to express how much I appreciate this series. The discussion yesterday I found very inspiring; I have ordered one of Sirees' novels which I very much look forward to reading. The issues of censorship, the borders on imagination, the uses to be made of cross-culture in creating new art I found extremely stimulating. These discussions are crucial and the existential costs for writers vary greatly depending on the political climate. I can't wait to see how this translates into his novel, The Silence and the Roar.
Thank you for generating this opening and outreach. It is a drop in the ocean that we must save......frank exchange brings hope and hope for the new world that needs input and protection for people who have the courage to articulate its elements.
Sincerely, Wallis Wilde-Menozzi
