Ayesha Sultan is an Emirati writer and publisher born in Dubai in 1962. She holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from United Arab Emirates University and a master's degree in Communication and Media Studies.
She worked as a history and geography teacher from 1984 to 1993 before transitioning to a career in journalism and media. She headed the cultural section of Al-Bayan newspaper (1997–2004) and subsequently managed political programming at Dubai TV (2004–2010). Since 1996, she has written a weekly column titled "Abjadiyat" (Alphabet/Basics) for Al-Bayan. She has also served as Vice Chair of the Emirates Writers Union and Vice Chair of the Emirates Human Rights Association, and was a board member of the Arab Journalism Award.
She is the founder and director of Waraq Publishing in Dubai, a board member of the Cultural and Scientific Association, a founding member of the UAE Journalists Association, and the founder of several book clubs in the UAE (such as "Salon Al-Kitab" and "Salon Al-Muntada").
Her published works include: Abjadiyat (1998), Shita’ al-Hikayat (Winter of Tales, 2012), Fi Madih al-Dhakira (In Praise of Memory, 2014), and Hawamish fi al-Mudun wa al-Safar wa al-Rahil (Marginalia on Cities, Travel, and Departure, 2015). She has also published a short story collection titled Khawf Barid (Cold Fear; Beit Al-Hikma for Culture, 2025) and another titled Hosh al-Ghuraba’ (Courtyard of Strangers; Al-Mutawassit, 2026).
Aisha Sultan focuses on documenting Emirati memory and its social transformations, employing a narrative sensibility that balances documentation with fiction, alongside a particular interest in "place" as a bearer of identity and memory. Her writing tends to revisit everyday details and marginal figures—in an attempt to interpret the transformations experienced by Emirati society from within—using a measured tone and a calm rhythm.
