CURRICULUM VITÆ
After graduating in Law and Sociology,
Richard Jacquemond (b. 1958, Saint-Etienne, France) studied Arabic
language both in France (Aix-en-Provence) and in Cairo. He was then
appointed Director of the Translation Department of the French Cultural
Mission in Egypt (1988-1995), where he launched and monitored a funding
program for translating French intellectual production into Arabic in
collaboration with Egyptian and Arab translators and publishers (around
100 titles published). This program also included the translation into
French of a selection of prominent Egyptian works of both fiction and
non-fiction. This experience lead him to write his Doctoral Thesis on
“The Egyptian literary field since 1967”, which he published later as a
book (see publications below).
In 1999, he was appointed maître de conférences (= Associate Professor)
in modern Arabic language and literature at the Dept of Near Eastern
studies, University of Provence, Aix-en-Provence (France), a position he
still heads now after another short term in Egypt as Higher Education
Officer for the French Cultural Mission (2003-2005).
When he was still studying Arabic, Richard Jacquemond started
translating modern Arabic literature, mainly Egyptian (Maguid Toubia,
1986). Since then, he has published another twelve translations.
He his currently preparing a new book on the politics and poetics of
translation from and to Arabic in contemporary Arabic culture.
