The first thing that struck me about this book was that this poetry, the things and the feelings and the stories in the book could be true anywhere in the world. You still read about the author's personal experience but she could be you, it could be your friend, here, there, anywhere. And then you feel this subtle tension running through the whole book: even if you read about a few pictures now and then, you cannot relax completely because this reading is too challenging, a deeper truth hidden in the words. Again it could be your truth, your friend's, your neighbour's.
I just loved it because it's traditional but innovative.

أجمل قصائد المجموعة على الاطلاق آخرها وعنوانها " حتى لا يتلوث أحد بدماء الواقع"
تترك الشاعرة العنان فيها لخيالها وتحلق بنا بين مصر وامريكا، بين الطفولة والنضوج، بين السياسة والدين، وتتغنى بما يفعله القدر بالانسان. شكرا للشاعرة الكبيرة ايمان مرسال وشكرا للمنتدى على حسن اختياره كالمعتاد.

he poetry in this book is not "immigration poetry"--but it is in part about the way places always force upon us a particular vocabulary. The emotional struggles in Alternative Geography present themselves through the poetic persona's attempt to navigate her voice, her emotions, her problems, her vulnerabilities (which are her own and not those of "the immigrant"); the problem is that she can only do that through her experience of being in another place--that is what immigration forces upon her I think, this restriction by the place itself to a particular set of scenarios, a particular vocabulary, a particular setting all of which are outside of what she knows. This is what touched me in this book, the ability or probably the vision of Iman Mersal to capture this struggle to live out her self in another place; again this is not about living the life of the immigrant intellectual or poet. What she has masterfully done is present the images and short scenes of someone's struggle with this sense of disjunction not only in a place that is not her own (what place is?) but also when even one's imagination must work with tools and alphabet and scenes and smells that are always a bit off--this is why i think the poems are in many ways only images and short scenes or feelings trapped only for the space of the poem. It was pleasurable to read.

The poem entitled “ They’re bringing down my family home” brings to life an entire childhood. This wonderful poem represents a link between a postmodern poetic style and the traditional arab poems that were based around the ruins of abandoned homes.

The book final poem offers a remarkable image in which the life we read in the previous poems is turning into a fantasy. I am inspired by Mersal's keen sense of details as well as her alternating humor.

اختلف مع وصف هذا الكتاب بالكتاب الغاضب وانا احببته كثيرا لانني شعرت ان فيه شك في كل المشاعر الواضحة : الوطن والحب والموت والذكريات والغضب ذاته وفيه شعرت بتنوع في بناء القصيدةولا اتفق ايضا مع تركيز المقالات على الهجرة لان الهجرة مجرد خلفية في رأيي لهذه التجربة.عندي سؤال بودي لو ترد عليه الشاعرة انني اشعر ان جيل التسعينيات في مصر متعالي على الصحاف

This is no doubt beautiful writing although I am not sure it qualifies as poetry. In any case some of it is fantastic while some parts are quite ordinary.

تقول المؤلفة في احدى قصائدها – ان جاز أن توصف بالقصائد –
" لم أراهن أبدا على الروح"
ثم تر د على نفسها في قصيدة أخرى
" أكثر من يد ستمتد لانتشالك ... وليس من بينها يد الله فلا تحزن"

فمتى تدرك المؤلفة أنه كان بامكانها أن توفر على نفسها كل هذا البؤس والكآبة والمرض النفسي والرغبات اللآثمة لو راهنت على الروح وسلمت أمرها لله.

I have enjoyed this collection immensely. It is an excellent description of the internal geography of migrants. Some of it is actually rather humorous eg. The six steps that the migrant has to follow in order to write a successful letter to his family back home.

وضعت الاستاذة ايمان مرسال يدها على الجرح ، فأعجبنى على سبيل المثال وصفها للفرق بين مجتمعنا والمجتمعات المتحضرة بأن هناك يعلقون ساعة في المكاتب العمومية بدلا من صورة الرئيس.
ملاحظة كم هي دقيقة ومؤلمة في نفس الوقت.

تصف الشاعرة المبدعة مأساة المهاجر ببساطة وحدة، فمثلا تقول:
" يعلقون على باب ثلاجة أسماء من ماتوا من الأهل
حتى لا يخطئوا ويطلبوهم في التليفون"

I really enjoyed reading the book. One of the marvelous pieces that touched me the most is Mourad. A dialogue between a mother and her son reflects their fears of the unknown.

I enjoyed reading this beautiful book.I feel that I did not read any angry poetry book in Arabic like Alternative Geography before. It is angry but elegant. Poems such as Elharb,Eldawlaa, Dokkan Kharaait are full of rich images and magnificent visions.
I should thank the readers club for selecting such a book.

روح المهاجر دائمة التنقل. لها جسدان وجغرافيتان وهويتان وذاكرتان. كغلاف كتاب "جغرافيا بديلة" الذي يمثل مصر ومقاطعة البرتا في كندا, قلم ايمان مرسال يخط من هنا وهناك, من عمق مصر ومن مدن وبيوت متعددة في كندا والولايات المتحدة. بين الجغرافيتين خواطر متعددة وأشخاص –حقيقيون وخياليون- يطلون من بين صفحات الكتاب ويعودون بالذاكرة الى الأمس أو اليوم أو الى ... المستقبل. كتاب ايمان مرسال شبيه بما قبله من كتبها من حيث زحمة الخواطر, سرعة العبارة والمفاجأة بما تؤول اليه كلمات منتقاة بعناية. تبقى فيه ايمان مرسال صاحبة روح يشكلها بعض التمرد وبعض السخرية والكثير من التأمل الثاقب. ولكن "جغرافيا بديلة" يتميز بعمق يعبر عن نقلة ليس في الاسلوب ولكن في التجربة وسعة المكان وأفق الزمان. ايمان بقيت كما كانت: شاعرة متأملة بعيون متمردة ولكنها الآن شاعرة مهاجرة بكل ما تضفي هذه الصفة على الاديب من تجارب نوعية.

عندما قرأت جغرافيا بديلة لأول مرة شعرت بالصدمة، ذلك أنني من هؤلاء الذين أحبوا وقرأوا أعمال إيمان السابقة حتى اهترأت. أعتقد أن سبب الصدمة كان أنني أتوقع من الشاعرة أن تكتب كما كتبت من قبل. مع إعادةالقراءة اكتشفت جماليات هذاالكتاب وتفوقه على ما قبله. الشعر في هذا الكتاب لا يأتي فقط من سرد محايد وصادم وهو ما تميز به ممر معتم ولكن هناتوجد روح أكثر نضجا.
