
Essam Youssef was born in Cairo in 1965 and is a graduate of the Department of
English, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University.
Coming from a family of acclaimed literary figures, Essam has spent most of this
decade compiling the realistic novel "1/4 Gram"; a brutally honest insider's
account on Egypt's drug world.
Relying on events from real life, Salah the narrator in
the novel tells the story of a group of friends who try a 1/4 gram for the first
time during a party on New Year's Eve.

Since 2000 Essam Youssef has been the Managing Director of The Egyptian
International Company for Environmental Protection (EICEP), a multi-disciplinary
engineering and consulting firm geared to provide its clients with various
environmental management needs. This professional experience allowed him to work
with the Ministries of Interior, Tourism and Environment in defining procedures
for drug-testing and for introducing alcohol and drug prevention programs.
In 2007, Youssef has started Montana Studios for Cinema Production. As the CEO
of this company, Youssef is working on several projects for adults and children.
Apart from his first published novel "¼ Gram", Essam Youssef has also written
the script of "Zahab wa Awda" (Round Trip), currently in the production
phase, and a collection of short stories that will be published in the near
future.
A film adaptation of his first novel "1/4 Gram" is scheduled to be released in
2009.
Essam Youssef is the son of Mr. Abdel Tawab Youssef, the godfather of Children's
Literature in Egypt and the Arab World, and Mrs. Notaila Rashed, editor in chief
of the most popular children's Arab publication Samir for over forty years.
Essam is married and has two children, Omar and Loubna.
