Essam Youssef was born in Cairo in 1965 and is a graduate of the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University.
Coming from a family of acclaimed literary figures, Essam has spent most of this decade compiling the realistic novel "1/4 Gram"; a brutally honest insider's account on Egypt's drug world.

Since 2000 Essam Youssef has been the Managing Director of The Egyptian International Company for Environmental Protection (EICEP), a multi-disciplinary engineering and consulting firm geared to provide its clients with various environmental management needs. This professional experience allowed him to work with the Ministries of Interior, Tourism and Environment in defining procedures for drug-testing and for introducing alcohol and drug prevention programs.

In 2007, Youssef has started Montana Studios for Cinema Production. As the CEO of this company, Youssef is working on several projects for adults and children. Apart from his first published novel "¼ Gram", Essam Youssef has also written the script of "Zahab wa Awda" (Round Trip), currently in the production phase, and a collection of short stories that will be published in the near future.

A film adaptation of his first novel "1/4 Gram" is scheduled to be released in 2009.

Essam Youssef is the son of Mr. Abdel Tawab Youssef, the godfather of Children's Literature in Egypt and the Arab World, and Mrs. Notaila Rashed, editor in chief of the most popular children's Arab publication Samir for over forty years.
